Only son of Thomas and Ada Gratwicke of “Keep Strong”, Bonfire Hill, Southwater
Norman joined up in February 1940 and became a Bren Gun carrier driver. He went overseas and landed in North Africa in January 1942, serving in the Tunisian campaign and later in the landings at Salerno and Volterno when he told his family they got “ a very bad reception from the enemy”. He spent the 1943/44 winter in Italy fighting in very bad conditions and was sent to Syria in late Spring for a rest, returning shortly afterwards to Italy.
Before the war he worked as a bricklayer.
